ATCS Monitoring with an ICOM IC-2AT?

Is this a good radio to use for ATCS monitoring? I got this radio fairly cheap. There also is a Motorola HD220 FM radio with a possible USB on it. Would this be a better radio to use? I’m new to Amateur Radio and ATCS. If these radios won’t work, then what would be a good cheap HAM Radio and ATCS Monitoring Radio to buy? Thanks for your help.

I’ve never heard of ATCS on the ham bands.

The //otorola radio is an HT (handi-talkie) HT220 and is an ANTIQUE. The nice thing about HT220′s is that you can pick them up for $5.00 to $10.00 each. The bad thing is that they are 15v radios, they will not work on 12V or 13.8v (car voltage).

The IC-2AT is just the opposite, it is a 9.6V to 10.8V, never exceed 10.8V or you will be rebuilding the power amp.
You can find clean IC-2AT’s for $25 to $30.00. Audio in/out is easy.

I use an IC-2AT for my APRS station in the car.

The HT220 and the IC-2AT are FM ONLY… no USB

The ATSC that I know about is on the Aircraft band, 108 to 126 MHZ, and is AM… you need an AM receiver. Neither the HT220 or the IC-2AT will receive 108 – 126MHz.

ham radio licensing

Living on a sailboat does not mean having a parrot on his shoulder all day saying ARGH. I remember the looks I'm skeptical about the dock. We just bought a package of Island May 35 and told me I'd take the boat to the Caribbean in November. Of course, you're behind my back … They said they do not know Diddly on navigation. PS … 14 years later most of them are still in the same dock.

See how I said I needed to know before you cruise.

Navigation – Living on a sailboat with a GPS makes it almost the same with Magellan. And if it breaks? Make a backup copy for less than $ 200 for a replacement. Is it difficult reading a map, find their position and plot points of interest? celestial navigation and sextant work. Give me a break, I could not find the North Star and Orion identify – is never much to do such things. Red is now … not the people of physics.

Radio controls – Living on a boat to be a ham. Barf – for a ham license you need to know Morse code. What! In the port used by the VHF to talk to your liking. Turn on the SSB and talk with friends 300 miles. You can show a child 10 years of use. You listen to NOAA weather forecast before you go island island, except that sits at the navigation station.

Living on a sailboat, you must be a mechanic. Now, it's true, you need a little knowledge here. Know where water can enter the boat, how work on his gland. You should be able to change the straps inboard engine, drain the diesel engine and how to rebuild your outboard carburetor. Other things you can collect. There are other cruises that can help.

Living on a sailboat, you need to know a lot of knots. Wrong – if you can tie a bowline and know how to tie a rope to a creek that you need in this area. Be patient, you should also know how to coil a line two minutes makes you learn. With a needle and waxed thread lashes you can keep all their own lines of research.

Living on a sailboat – you must be a real Marine. Never met the many yellow Slicker in eight years on the islands. I can not remember the score. Now, it's great to go jump sail island. But you make the passages where the sea is decreasing, max 4.6 feet and no wind on the nose. If you turn the engine and motor sail. Comfort and safety are number one. Spinnakers forget, I think we had the fall once.

Now when you live on a sailboat that much knowledge. You will also learn how much is just common sense.

If you are on the cruise ship dock and want, do not think you should have a doctorate in five areas of nautical knowledge. Those who think they are generally linked platform for life and not the most pleasant.

Living on a sailboat is fun. Using common sense and some basic knowledge, you can enjoy the journey. Hope you soon will.

Your best bet before investing as would be to obtain written permission from the owner to see if it would be interference with electrical appliances in the region. N8ODZ
